미국은 대학교육을 시키기 위한 준비과정으로 대학에서 영어를 가르치면서 영어 교육이 발전하였고 현재도 사설보다는 대학 부설 학교 중심으로 외국인에 대한 영어 교육이 활발하게 진행되고 있다.

그것과는 정반대로 영국은 수백년전에 사설영어학교에서부터 영어전문교육이 시작되었고, 수백년을 걸쳐서 축적되어진 영어교수법은 세계 어느나라와도 비교할 수 없는 영어교육의 노하우로 축적이 되었고 현재까지도 사설 영어 학교를 중심으로 외국인에 대한 영어 교육이 발전하고 사설 학교에서 이끌어지고 있다.
